COTS Product Operation Temperature Range and Reliability

Category: Product Support

Due to the traditional system application and new 5G and IoT challenges, the industry considers millimeterwave technology as an “old” but “new” frontier. The technology is steadily finding increased applications. Due to technological evolution and continued frequency expansion, key players like system engineers, technologist, integrators, innovators are continuously pushing the technology forward by demanding standard and custom building blocks, such as antennas, amplifiers, frequency converters, control devices, oscillators, ferrite devices, passive coaxial and waveguide components for their concept approval demonstrators, prototype systems, scientific apparatus, test lab hardware and production or program auto-test system applications.

Eravant recognized the market demands, responded to opportunities, and developed a total product solution composed of several thousand standard models covering the frequency range of 18 to 330 GHz and beyond in the past few years. By working with government, academia and industry leaders through customer funded and Eravant internal founded R&D programs, our product portfolio approaches nearly 5,000 distinct models.

In addition to many commercial, space and military, aerospace qualified products offered by Eravant, the majority of products listed on Eravant’s Website are Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) products. COTS products are able to satisfy rapid system concept demonstration, test labs tooling, instrumentation, and scientific apparatus requirements. Although many products are designed and fabricated to meet more stringent environmental and Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) specifications, Eravant was able to offer them to the market at affordable prices with reduced ranges by choosing not to go through the costly qualification process.

Today, many customers are still interested in understanding environmental and MTBF characteristics of the COTS products they purchase. This Blog intends to give general guidelines of the products’ operation temperature range and reliability data.

  • Passive components (i.e., products without external bias or do not utilize semiconductors) are specified to meet the ambient temperature range of -40 to +85 °C with MTBF greater 100 years.
  • Active components, the products with bias, or with semiconductors integrated in, are specified to meet the ambient temperature range of 0 to +50 °C with MTBF greater 10 years under normal use and good heatsinking conditions. Active components can be qualified or evaluated to meet various environmental standards and or longer MTBF through design updates, component grade selections, manufacturing process control or simply more testing. Such products will be given unique model numbers once they are qualified for certain higher standards. Contact support@eravant.com for information on whether a component can be upgraded to -ET or -MT model.
